Visa on Arrival
What is Vietnam visa on arrival?
Visa on arrival is an alternative way to obtain a visa for Vietnam in addition to the traditional way of getting a visa at Vietnam Embassy.
With this kind of visa, you – the visa applicant is required to submit an online application for a visa approval letter which functions as an official permission allowing you to board the flight and have visa stamped at the arrival airport in Vietnam. To get visa stamped, you need to submit your Vietnam approval letter together with your passport (at least 6 months validity), two passport-sized photos, Vietnamese visa application form and stamping fee to Immigration Officers at the airport.
There is a basic difference between visa on arrival and visa at Vietnam embassies. With visa on arrival, the Vietnam Immigration Department will issue a visa approval letter with your name on it stating that you are allowed to enter Vietnam on a specified date. Then, you will have the visa stamped onto your passport at the arrival airport in Vietnam. But for visa applied at the Vietnam embassies, the visa stamp will be on your passport when they send it back to you.
What is Vietnam Visa approval letter?
Vietnam Visa approval letter” is a document issued by Vietnam Immigration Department (Vietnam Ministry of Public Security). It functions as an official permission allowing its owner(s) to board the flight to Vietnam and get visa stamped onto the passport upon arrival at Vietnam airport.

How long does it take to get the “approval letter”?
In normal cases, you will receive the approval letter after 2 working days (for tourist visa) or 5-7 working days (for business visa) via email (excluding Saturday, Sunday, and National Holidays).
In urgent cases, you will receive the approval letter (for tourist visa) within the time frame below:
- Same Day Processing: if you submit your visa application form and pay the service fee before 12:00 PM (Vietnam time) on a working day (from Monday to Friday), you will receive the approval letter by 18:00 PM on the same working day.
- Next Day Processing: If you submit your visa application form and pay the fee after 12:00 PM (Vietnam time) on a working day (from Monday to Friday), you will receive the approval letter by 18:00 PM on the next working day.
or 2-3 working days for business visa.
Notes: The mentioned-above processing time is applied for working days, not Saturday, and Sunday and public holidays. Thus, please check the difference of time zones between Vietnam and your country.
Since Visa Counter at Vietnam international airports work 24/7 so if you already have the visa approval letter, you can get visa stamped regardless of your landing dates.
For a 3-month Vietnam visa, it probably takes up to 4 working days to get the approval letter these days.
How can I receive my Vietnam visa approval letter?
You will receive a colored scanned copy of the approval letter via email, so do ensure that you provide us with your correct email address.
What information do I need to provide to apply for my Vietnam visa approval letter?
To complete the online application for a Vietnam visa approval letter, the visa applicants need to provide the following information exactly as shown in their passports (as once issued, the approval letter could not be amended in any way).
- Full name (exactly as in your passport)
- Date of birth (DOB)
- Nationality
- Passport Number
- Proposed arrival date
- Proposed exit date
- Purpose of visit

Do I need to provide you with my exact arrival date to apply for visa on arrival?
You do not have to provide us with your exact arrival date, but the earliest date that you plan to arrive in Vietnam. You can totally arrive after that date. However, please note that you need to leave Vietnam prior to the expiry date mentioned on the approval letter.
For instance: If you wish to get a 1-month Vietnam visa and submit the arrival date as Feb 1, 2019, the visa approval letter will be valid from Feb 1, 2019 – Mar 1, 2019. You could arrive in Vietnam at any time between Feb 1 and Mar 1, yet must leave the country by Mar 1, 2019.
Note: The approval letter could not be changed after being issued; hence, if you wish to arrive earlier than the date mentioned on the letter, you have to apply for a new approval letter in order to update the arrival date.
You can apply for a Vietnam visa approval letter as soon as you wish, but it is advised to wait until a close date (about 1-2 months prior to departure) to apply for one so as to avoid any change in plan schedule.

Can I use Vietnam visa on arrival for my entry by land or sea?

What is Vietnam eVisa?
Vietnam evisa or Vietnam electronic visa (symbolized as EV) has been introduced by the Vietnam Immigration Department since February 2, 2017. This kind of Vietnamese visa is applied for and issued online.
What does a Vietnam eVisa look like?
A Vietnam evisa shows the following details:
- Full name, Date of birth, Sex, Nationality, Passport Number, Passport’s Expiry date of the evisa holder
- Travel dates (visa validity)
- Entry port
- Purpose of entry
- Inviting/ guaranteeing agency/ organization and its address, phone number (if any)
- Unique QR code which shows some details about the evisa holder, including Passport number and nationality.
It does not carry a red stamp of the Vietnam Government authority as it is issued online.

As mentioned above, under Resolution No. 127/NQ-CP dated August 14, 2023, Evisa Vietnam is now available for citizens of all countries and territories who wish to stay in Vietnam for no more than 90 days.
Vietnam eVisa Requirements
To apply for an Evisa for Vietnam, you must make sure that:
- Your passport is valid for at least 6 months following arrival date and has at least 02 blank pages;
- You have a soft copy of a passport-size photo (see Vietnam visa photo requirements);
- You have soft copies of your passport personal data page which must be full and clear;
- You have an exact entry port;
- You have a credit/debit card to make payment online for e-visa fee, (American Express card is not accepted).
Vietnam eVisa processing time
How long does Vietnam evisa take? It normally takes 03-05 working days to receive the e-visa letter; however, the processing time may be affected by a large number of applicants or public holidays. As such, you should consider applying for this kind of visa 1-2 weeks before departure.
Notes: Many applicants experience delays in their Vietnam e visa applications due to errors in the information they submitted on the official website, such as low-quality photos or incorrect names that do not match ICAO guidelines.

Vietnam eVisa cost
An e-visa for Vietnam costs you 25 USD for a single entry evisa or 50 USD for a multiple entry evisa. This fee is not refunded if your application is refused or your visa letter contains any wrong details which have been provided by you in the application form.
Vietnam evisa application steps
Here comes the full process of how to get an e-visa for Vietnam.
- Step 1: Access the E-visa official website at https://immigration.gov.vn and fill up all required information including:
- Photos of Passport data page and portrait photo as required
- All personal information and information regarding your Vietnam stay
- The registration code will be provided after Step 1. Save and keep it in a safe place for later check.
- Step 2: Pay an E-visa fee (25 USD for 1 month & 3 months single entry, 50 USD for 1 month & 3 months multiple entry). The processing time is 03-05 working days since your application is submitted.
- Step 3: Access the official website again. From the E-visa search menu (https://immigration.gov.vn), enter the registration code, registration email, and date of birth to check the result. If your application is approved, you can print E-visa from the system to enter and exit Vietnam.
Check Vietnam eVisa status and Download
Here are the steps to check your Vietnam evisa application status and download it when the evisa is issued.
- Go to https://www.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/en_US/web/guest/tra-cuu-ho-so and enter required information to check your eVisa application status:
- Registration code
- Date of birth
- See the Application status. If it is Granted visa, you can see your evisa by cliking on the Green arrow next to print visa.
- Click on Download icon to download your evisa.
Vietnam Evisa Extension
You cannot extend a Vietnam e-visa now. In case you wish to remain in Vietnam after your e-visa expiry date, you are highly recommended to leave Vietnam for a neighboring country and then come back with a new evisa.
Vietnam Evisa summary
- Vietnam e-visa is valid for 1 month in a single entry;
- E-visa cost is non-refundable, so ensure your application contains full information or contains no wrong details;
- Your port of entry granted on your e-visa is fixed, and you cannot change it after submitting your Vietnamese e-visa application or after your visa is issued. In case you change your port of entry, a new visa should be applied;
- No group application is accepted. Each application is for 1 applicant only.
- In case you want to visit Vietnam as a tourist but you are not eligible for an e-visa for Vietnam, please reschedule your travel until a tourist visa is issued by the Vietnam embassy or on arrival is available again.
- Previously, e-visa could be extended in Vietnam, but its extension has been currently suspended until further notice.
